Managing stakeholder processes strategically with the stakeholder map

25. May 2022

Involving all relevant stakeholders in a project from the very beginning and convincing them of the merits of the project is often a mammoth task. At the same time, the success of a project often depends on winning over convinced advocates.

Dylan Gillis

One of the characteristics of a project is that people with a wide range of influences, values, ideas and qualifications come together for a particular project. These differences need to be identified. It is no secret that the causes of project failure are rarely to be found in the technical-methodological environment, but rather in the social project environment. For this reason, it is indispensable to deepen the project environment analysis by analysing the most important stakeholders.

Many people have to leave their comfort zone in the course of a project. It is only human to be negative or sceptical about a change for very different motivations. Ignoring these stakeholders could, in the worst case, cause a project to fail.

In order to avoid as many pitfalls as possible in these sensitive processes and to proceed in a structured way, we have developed a template for a stakeholder map. It helps to get a quick overview of the stakeholder landscape, to determine the roles of the individual actors and to document changes.

The template supports, among others, in the following questions:

  • Who are the key stakeholders in the region?
  • What is their attitude towards the project?
  • What influence do they have on the success of the project?
  • What strategy will lead to success in dealing with the actors?
